A designer’s audacious declaration reclaims South Asian craftsmanship on the world’s most glamorous stage, from Lahore to the French Riviera.
Quietly, history was made on the sun-drenched French Riviera, where movie stars congregate every spring. On the red carpet, not on the screen.
Pakistani designer Hussain Rehar made history during the 79th Cannes Film Festival by being the first Pakistani designer to walk the renowned red carpet and show among international luxury brands Roberto Cavalli and Gucci.
Rehar’s presence represents something greater than one man accomplishing success in a field that European and American names have hitherto dominated. It signifies that South Asian fashion is emerging on the world’s most prestigious platform and calls on people to recognize, acknowledge, and honor the art form according to its own standards.

The Historic Moment: First Pakistani Designer at Cannes
Hussain Rehar carried more than just his personal goals when he walked the Cannes red carpet. He carried the burden of a country’s centuries-old craft traditions, fashion business, and an expanding international push to acknowledge South Asian craftsmanship.
Rehar combined traditional South Asian silhouettes with modern fashion sensibility in his outfit. He wore a bespoke handwoven sherwani made of brilliant light-gold tissue silk. The ensemble honored the region’s rich textile legacy, including the classic beauty of the subcontinent’s formal attire, delicate weaving skills, and zardozi embroidery.
However, one particular accessory drew attention.
The Imam Zamin Amulet
Rehar had an emerald-green Imam Zamin amulet around his neck, a customary piece that represents blessings and protection. Renowned designer Umar Sayeed gave him the item, which soon became one of the most talked-about aspects of his look.
A layer of patriotic symbolism was added to an already profoundly poignant ensemble by the amulet’s subtle allusion to Pakistan’s national colors.
Lahore: A Knot in South Asia’s Loom
A curated piece called “Lahore: A Knot in South Asia’s Loom” at the esteemed Château St. George was unveiled by Rehar outside the red carpet.
A Pakistani designer displayed their work alongside international fashion titans like Gucci and Roberto Cavalli in a venue connected to Cannes Film Festival for the first time. The invitation-only exhibition occurred concurrently with the film festival.
A Milestone for Pakistani Fashion
Almost immediately after Rehar’s premiere, Pakistani fans and celebrities celebrated the occasion as a long-overdue acknowledgement of the nation’s artistic prowess.
“Proud” was the actress Yumna Zaidi’s only remark. Kinza Hashmi, Sarwat Gillani, and many other prominent members of the industry congratulated the designer on elevating Pakistan’s profile on a worldwide scale.
Designer Rehar Growing Movement
Rehar’s attendance to Cannes is not a singular instance. It fits into a broader trend of South Asian fashion becoming well-known worldwide:
